That cold weather is here, and that means it’s time to put away your classic car for the winter. Storing your car for the season helps to prevent problems, but there are a few things that need to be kept in mind to make sure it’s done properly. After you’ve taken that last spin and it’s time to hang up the keys here is a list of things to be conscious of when storing your vehicle:

1. Protect the body. It may seem like a strange time to do it but this is the perfect opportunity to give your car a good cleaning – this includes a wash and wax. Once it’s sparkling make sure to cover it up. Insulated garages are ideal but a portable carport will also do the trick. Be extra cautious if you’re living in an area that gets heavy snowfalls which could build up around the vehicle.

2. Fill up your tank. Give your car a top-up at the gas station and be sure to add in some fuel stabilizer then take it for a short ride so that this can mix in.

3. Store the battery inside. The cold weather can create issues with the battery in your vehicle – it’s best to take it out and keep it inside as to avoid draining it. Even if your car is stored in a heated garage you should still be mindful of keeping the battery charged using a trickle charger.

4. Beware of rodents! Your car may seem like the perfect place for some furry critters to hibernate for the winter… make sure that doesn’t happen! Keep traps at the base of all four tires as well as a couple in the car. Place steel wool in the exhaust pipe – but don’t forget to take it out in the spring!

Winter tends to be Canada’s longest season… don’t let that wreak havoc on your Classic car. Follow these simple steps and your vehicle will be good as new (or, good as old I suppose) come the springtime!
